Kayak-Assisted Concert Tour to Benefit Great Bear Rainforest
Musician on a Mission: Kayak-Assisted Concert Tour to Benefit Great Bear Rainforest
September 24 (Vancouver, BC): Gibsons based singer-songwriter/ "guitarist extraordinaire" Steve K will soon kayak into Vancouver for the last leg of his Strait of Georgia kayak-concert tour, a 5 week/12 show tour to support wilderness conservation in BC. On Saturday, October 4th, he will play in Vancouver at the WISE Hall with his band the HARDWOOD GROOVE, as part of a celebration of British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest, the largest temperate rainforest left in the world, providing critical habitat for bears, wolves and salmon.
With his guitar and camping gear stowed in his kayak, Steve has paddled between shows in Powell River, Quadra Island, Courtenay, Denman Island, Parksville, Nanaimo, Gabriola Island, Duncan, Victoria, Mayne Island, Gibsons, and now comes to Vancouver.
"Kayaking is a beautiful way to travel," says Steve. "I want to conduct my business in the most environmentally sound way possible, and I'm hoping the novelty will attract interest at this critical time for the Great Bear Rainforest."
As clear-cut logging continues to threaten the Great Bear Rainforest, the Provincial Government now has a brief window of opportunity to both protect this treasure and help coastal communities move towards a sustainable conservation economy.
Meika Johnson, Great Bear Rainforest Outreach coordinator says, "All summer we were educating British Columbians about ongoing threats to the region, and the possibility for a huge conservation success. We wanted to have a celebration concert for all the people who believe in this work." Johnson works with a coalition of Greenpeace, ForestEthics and the Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter who made headlines by securing temporary logging bans in almost 100 rainforest valleys on BC's coast.
Steve K performs contemporary folk music featuring "hot, intricate acoustic guitar work... excellent guitar playing and songwriting" (Monday Magazine). He is a graduate of the University of Victoria School of Music, where he majored in classical guitar and minored in voice. His songs explore a number of hilarious, heart-warming, and heart-wrenching themes: childhood mishaps, broken families, fragile dreams, and his profound love of nature.
The concert takes place Saturday, October 4th, at the WISE hall, 1882 Adanac Street. It features Steve K and the HARDWOOD GROOVE, great door prizes, and a slideshow.
