- What is the Rainforest Solutions Project?
- ForestEthics, Greenpeace, Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter and Rainforest Action Network (RAN) make up the Rainforest Solutions Project, a collaborative initiative set up to make the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement a reality on the ground, by protecting the most important areas of the rainforest, changing logging practices and supporting a sustainable future for local communities.
- Biodiversity
- Ancient rainforests are storehouses for biodiversity - between 50 to 90% of the world's terrestrial species are housed in ancient rainforests. A shovel full of healthy forest soil contains more living organisms than there are humans on earth. (Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter)
- Rainforest Solutions & the Coast Information Team
- The four environmental groups that comprise the Rainforest Solutions Project were one of the CIT's funding partners and participated in the process.
- The Turning Point Initiative
- The Turning Point Initiative was formed in 1999 by eight First Nations of British Columbia's central, north coast, and Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and the David Suzuki Foundation to encourage new solutions to help coastal First Nation communities. Regular meetings brought First Nations together to share their experiences and concerns and discuss solutions. The Initiative led to a General Protocol Agreement in 2001 with the BC government that committed to give First Nations more control and benefits from the forests. It also required that logging in the region be ecologically responsible. The agreement provided a general framework for First Nations to independently negotiate their own land use agreements. These negotiations are currently underway.
- What is the JSP?
- The Joint Solutions Project participants are: Weyerhaeuser Canada, Western Forest Products (Doman Industries), Canadian Forest Products (Canfor), Norske Canada, and International Forest Products (Interfor) along with the Rainforest Solutions Project: Sierra Club of Canada, B.C Chapter, ForestEthics, Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace.
