The Turning Point Initiative
The Turning Point Initiative was formed in 1999 by eight First Nations of British Columbia's central, north coast, and Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and the David Suzuki Foundation to encourage new solutions to help coastal First Nation communities. Regular meetings brought First Nations together to share their experiences and concerns and discuss solutions. The Initiative led to a General Protocol Agreement in 2001 with the BC government that committed to give First Nations more control and benefits from the forests. It also required that logging in the region be ecologically responsible. The agreement provided a general framework for First Nations to independently negotiate their own land use agreements. These negotiations are currently underway.
