May 2007

The majority of protected areas are formally legislated

Learn about progress in meeting this milestone on our progress blog

1.22 million hectares are to be formally legislated in approximately 110 anticipated conservancies throughout the Great Bear Rainforest bringing the total protection to over 2 million hectares.

A protected areas map was agreed to by all parties and announced to the world on February 7th, 2006. It is expected that boundaries will not change as the Government of British Columbia legislates the protected areas shown in this map.

Private funding for the conservation-based economy hinges on the formal legislation of protected areas and key commitments to the new system of logging. It is expected that all of these requirements will be met by the Government of British Columbia and First Nations by fall of 2007.

This private funding will be combined with public funding to First Nations for sustainable economic development initiatives.

Next milestone: June 2007
