Building a Solution

The transition from a resource-based economy to a thriving, conservation economy requires a strong plan and enough commitment, investment and vision to see it through.

Building an enduring, sustainable solution for the Great Bear Rainforest won’t happen with the tap of a magic wand. The transition from a resource-based economy to a thriving, conservation economy requires a strong plan and enough commitment, investment and vision to see it through.

At this stage, land-use planning recommendations have been developed. They show how to protect ecosystems so a coastal conservation economy can be supported in the rainforest.  These plans were informed by a variety of stakeholders who brought science, ecological, local and traditional First Nation knowledge and industry expertise.

Throughout this process, the groups in the Rainforest Solutions Project played a crucial role. They worked with First Nations, forest companies and communities to find new economic solutions for the Great Bear Rainforest. They funded cutting edge science, participated at land-use planning tables and shared expertise with First Nations.

But the work is far from over.

The land-use plans are currently awaiting the outcome of government-to-government negotiations, then legal mechanisms will follow. Implementation of the land-use plans requires enough investment and regular, on the ground monitoring to ensure sustainable economic opportunities become realities.

Rainforest Solutions Project member groups have been working to attract investment and funding to the region. Without these components in place, a lasting solution for the Great Bear Rainforest remains highly uncertain.
